SEPSYNC / STUDY CONCEPT 2026

Multicentre simulation study

Temporal documentation and QS case reconstruction in sepsis care

Exploratory study proposal · Not yet approved.

RESEARCH QUESTION

Does a minimal additional time layer improve completeness, temporal traceability and subsequent reconstruction of a simulated sepsis case?

Study framework

Hospitals10
Physicians per hospital10
Participants100

One simulation day per hospital · Two scenarios per physician · Synthetic cases only.

Approx. 30–35 min. per physician · Planning estimate

SEQUENCE & METHODOLOGY

Two scenarios. A clear sequence.

Short simulated emergency department scenarios with competing cases, interruptions and incoming results. Immediately after their clinical note, participants answer selected QS-Sepsis questions – before proceeding to the next scenario.

At each hospital, ten physicians are divided into two groups:

Group 1 (n=5): Case A without SepSync → Case B with SepSync.

Group 2 (n=5): Case B without SepSync → Case A with SepSync.

SepSync is introduced only before the second run.

The fixed order without → with SepSync may produce learning effects. The study is exploratory.

QS / QM

Independent assessment

Documentation and QS responses are coded and assessed against the synthetic reference sequence by external, independent QS/QM professionals, blinded wherever feasible.

  1. Completeness and accuracy of selected QS-Sepsis information
  2. Temporal traceability
  3. QM reconstruction and processing time
  4. Effort / Usability
  5. Site assessment

COLLABORATION

Your hospital provides

  • Ten physicians
  • Simulation space and basic equipment
  • Emergency department / intensive care / QS / QM contacts
  • Local clinical review
  • Guidance on ethics, privacy, employee representation and local approvals

SepSync provides

  • Study coordination
  • Synthetic scenarios and reference timeline
  • Simulation prototype and compact data capture
  • Evaluation and site-specific feedback
  • Manuscript draft

PREREQUISITES

Prerequisites and limitations

  • No real patient data in the proposed simulation.
  • Ethics review, local approvals and informed consent must precede participation. No study sites are claimed as secured.
  • Publication coauthorship depends on actual contribution.
  • Potential relevance for medical controlling is exploratory. A simulation study cannot demonstrate additional reimbursement.
